Bible Text: Luke 24
Key Verse: Luke 24:30-31
Luke 24:1 on the first day of the week, at early dawn: The Jewish Sabbath ends at sunset Saturday evening. The women waited to bring spices to the tomb until early Sunday morning.
Luke 24:9 the eleven: there were eleven apostles insterad of tweleve, because Judas is not with them now.
Luke 24:10 Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James: Mary, the mother of James, may be the mother of one of teh two disciples names james, but it is unclear.
Luke 24:26 was it not nescessary that the Messiah should suffer these things: for believing Jews at the time of Jesus, the answere to this question simply would have been "no". The Messiah was expected to defend them against their enemies, restore balance to all creation by feeding the hungry and rasing up the poor, bring peace on earth, and rule forever. After Jesus' suffereing, death, and resurrection, hos followers esearched to find passages that delt with suffering and the Messiah.
Luke 24:53 they were continually in the temple: the first scene in Luke takes place in the temple, the stable, safe center of the Jewuish universe. Now the last scene returns there. By the time this Gospel was written and read, however, the temple would lie in ruins.
